River BioMedics span out of the University of Twente in 2020 co-founded by Marcelo Ribeiro, Lisanne Blauw and Robert Passier.

The three founders have a profound understanding of cardiac disease, human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC) differentiation and bioengineering, as well as the application of these technologies to drug discovery.

ACTIVITIES

River BioMedics is a cardiovascular drug discovery company with expertise in hiPSC derived 3D cardiac functional models and small molecule drug discovery.  

The company has a pipeline of genetically validated, cardiac centric targets which they are targeting with a small molecule approach to treat cardiovascular diseases. The in-house developed, human 3D cardiac models are being used for target validation and compound screening.

The inclusion of these human-predictive models into the drug discovery pipeline provides a unique opportunity to select, early on in the drug discovery process, those compounds that have a high chance of showing human efficacy in clinical trials.

RESULTS

Currently our in-house technology has been used to successfully validate our first target and small molecule drug discovery studies are well underway. By using our 3D human cardiac in vitro models for target and compound validation, a human relevant drug discovery pipeline will be created.

AMBITION

Developing treatments for cardiac diseases with high unmet needs is at the forefront of River Biomedics’ ambitions. Next to that the aim is to use the 3D Cardiac Strips to increase the success rate of cardiac drug discovery and bring novel drugs to patients more efficiently.

TEAM

The River BioMedics team consists of passionate group of people with combined background in Stem Cell Technologies, Biochemistry, Drug Discovery, Engineering and Medicine. Together they are ready to take on the challenge of bringing cardiac drug discovery to the next level.
